Youth Serving Resources


SPPL offers a variety of resources to support staff working with youth. Use this list to determine which resources are available and how to find and request them.


Board Book Kits

Board Book Kits contain 8-12 copies of a single book and are great for goup read-alouds in storytime and other programs. To request a kit, Keyword search Baby Storytime Staff Kit in Sierra. There are over 70 kits currently available for staff use.

Storytime Kits

Kits contain an adaptable thematic selection of books, props, music and objects to support SPPL storytimes. To request a kit, report damage, or replenish supplies, contact the Youth Services Department at GLCL. Depending on system demand, a kit may be kept for approximately 3 weeks.  

  • Storytime Kit #1 Themes: Seasons, Fall, Squirrels, Trees, Pumpkins. Includes books, music, a squirrel puppet, a large foam pumpkin "Mouse House," a large size flannel/prop story for Fall is Not Easy by Marty Kelley, and a binder with storytime support ideas.
  • Storytime Kit #2 Themes: Boxes, Surprises, Foxes, Colors. Includes books, music, a rhythm game with colored nesting boxes, a musical prop story companion for the big book When This Box is Full by Patricia Lillie, and a binder with storytime support ideas.
  • Storytime Kit #3 Themes: Music, Rhythm, Drums, Farms, Neighborhood. Includes books, music, a large Pete the Cat plush doll, 25 shaker eggs, 1 set of rhythm sticks, a cardboard barn with three hand puppets to accompany the song "Old MacDonald," and a binder with storytime support ideas. 

Early Literacy Play Kits

Early Literacy Play Kits contain everything you need to create a small play area focused on early learning, including toys, signage, caregiver prompts, and set-up ideas. Kits are created by the Birth-Kindergarten Team and may be checked out for three months at a time. To request a kit, report damage, or replenish supplies, contact the Youth Services Department at GLCL. The first kits will be available fall 2017.

Passive Programming Kits

Passive Programming Kits are geared toward school-age children but can be used for a wide variety of ages. Kits include maker-based supplies and can be used during an active program or put out for kids to explore independently. To request a kit, report damage, or replenish supplies, contact the Youth Services Department at GLCL.

Hayden Heights houses a large puppet collection. For a complete list of puppets and photos, go to the Intranet. Request puppets by contacting Hayden Heights staff.

Youth Services Budget

Brochures, giveaways, and Outreach Items

The Materials Management Center has lots of promotional brochures, items to give away at events, and other outreach items you may be interested in using at events (button maker, prize wheel, etc.). Materials can be requested by contacting Suzanne McGinn or Youa Lee at the MMC. A full list of available items is available on the Intranet.

Professional Development

Professional development is a critical and ongoing part of successfully working with youth and families. Staff are eligible to receive financial support from SPPL to pursue professional development opportunities through Perrie Jones funds. If you are interested in financial support (seriously, don't be shy), talk to your supervisor and Deputy Director Tony Yang. There is a Training Funds Request Form to complete when requesting funds for conferences, workshops, tuition reimbursement, and other trainings that you are planning to attend. This form is found on the SPPL Intranet in the Training & Development section, found on the navigation bar on the left side of the screen.
